Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, we at Name Guru NZ are excited to help people in Aotearoa and beyond. We provide expert knowledge and considered feedback to help you to select that perfect name for your baby, for yourself, or another loved one.
Our approach
We know that names are subjective, and choosing a name is a very personal experience. We will work with you to help you find a name that truly suits you and your family.
This means we will ask questions about many aspects of your life, including family history and values, the names of other people in your family, any meanings or connotations you want to include or avoid, any religions you practice, and more. You can share as much or as little as you like with us - your comfort is our priority.
In particular we like to encourage our clients to consider names that are unique, but not too unique - we prefer to recommend names that are easily recognisable, but not so common that your child will have three people with the same name in every class! For example, we usually advise against looking for avant-garde spellings of common names, purely so that you don't find yourself spelling out the name for the rest of your life.
Ultimately you are the best person to decide on a name. We are here to provide ideas and help you shape your thinking.
The process
When you contact us and fill out a contact form, one of our Name Gurus will be in touch within a couple of days with any further information we need - either providing a questionnaire for you to fill out, or to tee up a time for a video meeting.
Once we receive that information back from you, we will send you an invoice for our services. We ask that payment be made within 48 hours of receiving the invoice; however we understand that this is not always possible, so please don't be scared to let us know if you need more flexibility.
Once payment has been received on our end, you will receive your name consultation advice. This will either be by email if you have selected one of the first two packages, or over video call if you have selected the third package.
Meet the gurus
Kirsty Simpson (she/her) has had an interest in linguistics since school, and spent her time learning the meanings and origins of various words. Over time, this developed into a love and deep knowledge of different names from all around the world. Watching friends become expectant parents and struggle to find a name for their bubba, Kirsty was able to step in to help her friends decide on the perfect name.
After seeing name consultation businesses overseas, Kirsty was inspired to set up Name Guru in 2024 to add a local flavour to the market.
Lisa Evans (she/her) joined the Name Guru team in early 2025. With three children of her own, Lisa is well aware of the pressure involved in deciding on a name for your baby. She is pleased to have the chance to help other people in the same boat.
